Dubai Public Transport: Every Mode Explained

Dubai's transport network is bigger than the metro — eight distinct modes, most of them living on one Nol card. Here's the whole system on a page, and when to use which.

How It All Connects

Choosing Your Mode: Simple Rules

  1. If both ends are near stations → metro, always (nearest-station finder).
  2. Beach or Marina waterfront → metro + tram.
  3. No station nearby → metro to the closest stop + feeder bus or short taxi — still half the cost of a full taxi (comparison).
  4. After midnight (1 am Fri) → taxis and night buses have the city to themselves.

Daily Nol spending caps at AED 14 across metro/tram/bus — effectively an unlimited day pass that builds itself.

Etihad Rail: The Intercity Train (New in 2026)

Since 30 September 2026, Dubai sits on the UAE’s national railway. Etihad Rail runs around 10 daily trains between Al Yalayis Station (Dubai) and Mohamed Bin Zayed City Station (Abu Dhabi) in about 64 minutes, from AED 39 — plus direct Fujairah services (~1 h 10 min) and a stop at Al Dhaid in Sharjah. The metro links straight in: Red Line to Jumeirah Golf Estates, then the dedicated footbridge. QR tickets integrate with metro, tram and bus. Full guide: Dubai to Abu Dhabi by train.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does one card work on all Dubai public transport?

Almost — the Nol card covers metro, tram, public buses and water buses. Only the Palm Monorail (own ticket) and taxis (meter/app) sit outside the Nol system.

How do the metro and tram connect?

Via footbridges at Sobha Realty and DMCC stations; tapping onto the tram within 30 minutes of leaving the metro counts as a single journey.

What is the cheapest transport in Dubai?

The AED 1 abra across the creek is the cheapest single ride; day-to-day, the metro/bus network with its AED 14 daily cap is the cheapest way to cover the whole city.
