Old Dubai in a Day by Metro: The Perfect Itinerary
The best day out in Dubai costs almost nothing: the Green Line, an AED 1 wooden abra, and the trading quarters that built the city. Here's the field-tested loop, station by station.
Morning: Deira's Souks
- 9:30 am — Gold Souq station. Walk 10 minutes into the Dubai Gold Souk as shutters open — window-shop tonnes of gold before the tour groups arrive.
- 10:30 am — wander to the Spice Souq (towards Al Ras): saffron, frankincense and dried limes in sacks; haggle gently, buy small.
- 11:15 am — Heritage stop: Al Ahmadiya School and Heritage House sit tucked behind the souq lanes, free and blissfully quiet.
Midday: Cross the Creek Like It's 1960
From Deira Old Souq abra station, board a wooden abra across the creek — AED 1, paid in coins on the bench. It's the single best-value experience in the city. You land at Bur Dubai Old Souq, straight into the Textile Souk's shaded arcade.
Afternoon: Bur Dubai's Historic Quarter
- 1:00 pm — lunch in Meena Bazaar (near Sharaf DG station): the Indian and Pakistani canteens here are legendary and cheap.
- 2:00 pm — Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood: wind-tower houses, the Coffee Museum, galleries and the Al Fahidi Fort / Dubai Museum on its edge.
- 3:30 pm — Al Seef: stroll the restored creekside promenade towards Al Gubaiba, where the Al Shindagha Museum's pavilions tell the pearl-to-skyscraper story properly.
Evening Finish (Pick One)
- Golden hour on the water: a second abra ride at sunset, when the creek turns amber.
- Old-to-new whiplash: Green→Red at BurJuman and surface at Burj Khalifa for the fountains — 1960 to 2026 in twenty minutes.
The Budget
Metro hops AED 3–5, two abras AED 2, and the AED 14 daily cap means transport for the entire day tops out under AED 20. Museums are a few dirhams each. Check timings, wear walking shoes, and go Tuesday–Thursday for the calmest souqs.
